WILD OCEAN TASMANIA

King and Queen of the Tasman Peninsula
Ocean is our home, our passion
Throughout history, people have relied on the ocean for their livelihood.
The ocean nurtures countless life forms and protects us and our planet.
Yet, what we can give back to the ocean is relatively little.
WILD OCEAN TASMANIA is a local whale-watching company.
Captain Damo and his assistant Susie have been running this business together for over 10 years, offering whale-watching tours and marine explorations.
As a native Tasmanian, Captain Damo grew up with beautiful memories gifted to him by the ocean.
Carrying these memories into adulthood, he dedicates himself to ocean work, caring deeply for the place he calls home.
Unique Geography/ Marine Ecosystem
Tasmania has a unique geographic location at 42°S, 147°E, it lies directly along the migratory routes of whales.
From June to August, whales migrate northward, and from September to November, they begin their journey back south. This creates two distinct whale-watching seasons each year.
Australia is home to over 45 whale species (including both whales and dolphins), with humpback whales, southern right whales, sperm whales, and blue whales making up the primary groups. During their migration, they mainly feed on small fish, Antarctic krill, and plankton.
On a recent ocean adventure, we gained a glimpse into Captain Damo’s profound respect and admiration for the ocean he navigates. As we sailed over calm waters, Susie and Damo worked tirelessly to spot signs of whales.
Along the way, we were greeted by charming sea creatures and seabirds riding the wind, with towering basalt cliffs and magnificent sea caves stretching along the coast.
Then, as if by magic, near the journey’s end, we saw an expanse of black stretching across the horizon like an endless train. Moving closer, Captain Damo slowly guided the boat toward the scene, where the sky was blanketed with dark-toned seabirds.
Suddenly, the view unfolded before us: the ocean teemed with feeding whales and flocks of seabirds. The breathtaking scene rendered us speechless, and the sound of camera shutters filled the air.
At that moment, it felt like we weren’t just observing whales—we were surrounded, held in an embrace by the ocean itself.
A surge of overwhelming emotion filled me, a blend of awe and exhilaration. Tears slipped from the corners of my eyes, carried away by the wind, returning to the sea.
Right then, I realized the profound importance of protecting the ocean.
Looking back, facing forward
We’ve now been living in Tasmania for five years, and it’s also the fifth year since we met W.O.T.
Meeting them has been the greatest gift we’ve received on this island. They have given us hope and courage to continue exploring the world.
Their deep love and care for the ocean have allowed us to experience a greater understanding of our planet.
If you’re visiting Tasmania and have a love for the ocean and a longing for nature, consider joining one of their tours to explore the sea.
